Partner Highlight—The Evansville Wartime Museum

So here I was driving my Cadillac behind an older gentleman, following him as he drove in his grey Toyota 4Runner around to the Igleheart arboretum and the Evansville Wartime Museum. Unbeknownst to me, he was the Chairman of the museum and on the board of directors of Igleheart. This nonchalant Sunday morning turned to be more significant than I had expected.

It all started on a sunny afternoon, September 11th, 2022, 21 years after the tragic morning thousands of people lost their lives at the WTC. I have just finished grabbing my coffee, cream, and donut and found a chair at a table of strangers. Not all of us were—some were life-long friends chatting away. The coffee and donuts was organized by a local parish in Evansville.

This older gentleman was sitting to my right, in his seventies. We did our formalities of introducing our names. His was Mark.

“So what do you do for work, John?”

“Well, I built this app where you can pan your phone left and right and see overlays of information about nearby businesses through the camer—" I said as I moved my hand from left to right holding an imaginary phone to explain the technology.

Mark interrupted as he stood up to throw away his napkins.

”Can you do this for the museum? Do you think you can? I have work for you—you got to work for me… I’m going to give your business work.”

"Sure, it hasn’t been done before but it’s the same idea — but we can make it work.” I said, still intrigued at how quickly he wanted to apply our technology.

"You have some time this afternoon? I can drive to the arboretum and museum and you can follow behind me.”

I’m not easily surprised by people I meet. Mark is one of those exceptions. A year later from when we met, I pulled up to the museum when it was closed to make sure the XPHERA system was functioning properly and to resolve a number of glitches. Walking into the back, I was surprised to see Mark, chairman of the museum, in the utility room with a hammer in hand, nailing a shelf together.

But that wasn’t the most surprising aspect about Mark. During one of our conversations about the visitor experience on a Sunday morning, Mark suddenly got a phone call.

"Hold one minute” he told me.

Turns out, he wasn’t just Mark. He was Dr. Browning, head of the Evansville Hospital’s oncology unity, and he was answering a patient’s call. A few weeks later, we were continuing to hold our discussions and we and a few other staff members were in front of a framed photograph of 2 P-47 Thunderbolt planes flying side by side.

”Nice plane” I commented.

"Yeah, I was flying that one.” Mark abruptly interjected.

I was again bewildered and amazed to be working alongside such a great individual.

This is the story that paved our evolution to where we are today. This was XPHERA’s own 9/11. Although nothing compared to the tragedy of September 11th, it changed the course of XPHERA’s evolution in a positive way. We owe it to Dr. Browning and the great team at the Evansville Wartime Museum.

The Pareto Principle

"In many cases, a small percentage of customers contributes the largest share of revenue and profit for a business. Identifying and focusing on these high-value customers can significantly enhance overall performance."

— Frederick F. Reichheld, The Loyalty Effect: The Hidden Force Behind Growth, Profits, and Lasting Value (1996)
